- Paying The Price For Time In Sun
The renowned Slip-Slop-Slap campaign wasn’t thought of when Echuca’s Terry Nanscawen was growing up.
He has fond memories of his childhood which involved tearing around his backyard without a shirt, hat or sunscreen.
About two in three Australians will be diagnosed with skin cancer by the time they are 70, with more than 750,000 people treated for one or more non-melanoma skin cancers in Australia each year.
Excluding non-melanoma skin cancer, melanoma is the third most common cancer in Australians.
But the dangers of ultraviolet radiation were relatively unknown in the ‘40s and ‘50s and Terry is paying the price in his golden years for his extended time in the sun.
The 75-year-old was concerned about an itchy black dot on his neck and got his doctor to check it out.
It was one of two melanomas Terry has had removed and he said his fate could have been much worse had he not caught them early.
‘‘We didn’t think about skin cancer when I was growing up – nobody did,’’ he said.
‘‘My brothers have had their fair share of skin cancers removed as well. It’s all about getting them early.
‘‘I urge anyone who suspects they might have one to go to a doctor and get them checked out.’’
2. Five Unique Uses of Petroleum Jelly
Petroleum gel has been around us for so long. But what are its benefits? And, how can we use it in other different ways? Of course, people often use it as a lip balm to keep the lips soft and supple, others also use it like a quick first aid to minor cut or bruise. But there are more ways in which this easily available and pocket friendly gel can be used around the house. Here are 5 ways for a quick read:
Heals Cracked Feet
Petroleum gel is one of the best cures to heal cracked feet and make your feet softer. Rub a coat of gel on your feet during night and pull on a pair of socks. A week of this can soften the most hardened, neglected heels!
Cuticles are made up of protein and they tend to become dry and cracked when the skin loses its moisture. We’re not suggesting you wash your hands less frequently, but soaps can dry out the hands and the first signs of dryness typically show up around the nails. The non-greasy layer of petroleum gel will protect your cuticles from the loss of moisture and prevents dryness.
3. Four Ways to Wear Perfume
Want a subtle scent or to take over a room when you arrive? Both effects can be achieved with the same perfume. All you need to change is how you put it on. Here are four ways to do it!
DAB IT ONTO YOUR SKIN
If you want to make your perfume more transparent, then try dabbing it onto your skin rather than spraying it. The neck and wrists are perfect places for this type of application.
SPRAY YOUR HAIR OR CLOTHES
The warmer you get, the faster your scent evaporates. So, if you tend to get hot – try applying fragrance to your clothes or hair, rather than spraying it directly onto the skin. Just be careful with delicate fabrics to avoid stains.
ADD IT TO YOUR BODY LOTION
Extend the lifespan of your fragrance by mixing it with unscented body lotion. Just add a few sprays to the cream in your hand, then apply it to your body. You’ll smell lovely all day!
TAKE A SCENTED BATH
What can be more pampering that bathing in the perfume you love? Just add 2 drops of perfume or 3-4 sprays of Eau de Toilette to a warm bath. It’s a real treat!

4. Onion Juice + 4 Other Ways To Naturally Thicken Eyebrows
Rub on some onion juice
This method is both surprising and strange, but it delivers results! Onions might be outrageously pungent but they work wonders for hair loss. Many people swear by this all-natural homemade hair growth remedy. Onion juice contains sulphur so it will quickly increase your blood flow, creating hair growth on your stubborn brows.During this scientific study, patients suffering from hair loss were asked to apply onion juice twice a day for two months. After four weeks, hair re-growth was seen in 17 patients (73.9 percent). And, at six weeks, the hair re-growth was observed in 20 patients (86.9 percent) and was significantly higher among males (93.7 percent) compared to females (71.4 percent).Apply onion juice to your eyebrows and leave it on for ten minutes. Then, rinse off the juice with warm water. Try putting onion juice on your eyebrows twice a day.
Since thin eyebrows can be frustrating and lack shape, many women resort to over-plucking their brows in hopes of shaping them into a way that gives the illusion of thickness. This will never give your brows a chance to grow! Drop your tweezers entirely and forget about any pesky stray hairs that are driving you wild. Plucking will only thin your brows more, eliminating their chance to thicken naturally.
