Ketogenic Diet

Recently there was a huge hullabaloo about someone dying while on Keto diet. Really, someone dying on Keto? Wow! I have my reservations but sha, here is my Opinion.

I am a big proponent of Keto diet as I have done it with massive success under doctor’s supervision and I lost about 50lbs but…. The love of abula, will not let me be great.

It is my personal belief that Keto diet can be done safely for a short while. I do know people that have been doing keto for over 3 years and are very successful at it.

First of all what is “Keto diet”? Keto diet, Formally Ketogenic diet, also known as LCHF (Low carb high fat), Low carb diet, is the process where an individual intentionally restricts carbohydrates in order to lose weight.

How does it work?  Back in our secondary school days, at least back in my day at the great secondary school Abeograms ( Yeske, I am a proud Agsoba),in our introduction to science class, we were taught, that carbohydrates are the way the body obtains energy.
What if I told you there was another way. I know you are thinking na lie! But seriously, there is another way the body obtains energy. That, is the science behind Ketogenic diet.

You see, scientists figured that, the body is a lazy animal, it burns carbohydrates first because it is the easiest to break down. However, in the absence of Carbohydrates, the body will burn fat for energy and like that, Ketogenic diet was born.

The goal of Keto is to force the body into the state of using the stored fat for energy and this is achieved by eating the right and proper fats.

Let’s use for example, you eat abula with ponmo kika and all the meats that comes with it, Yum!! (What, it’s my favorite food jo).

The body will burn the amala first and convert the meat into fat and put it in storage since it does not need it. Keto posits that instead of eating the amala, just eat the meat and efo riro. Then, the body will be forced to burn the meat and fats since there is not carbs to burn.

Where people go wrong in Keto is by not doing proper research. Most people just jump on the band wagon of diets without reading up.  People erroneously think Keto is Low carb, High protein diet.  Keto is actually Low carbs, Moderate Protein and High healthy fats. For the efiwe mathematically inclined, the proper ratio of eating on Keto is 5% carbs, 35% Protein and 65% healthy fats. Now this is not all the mathematics involved ooo, there are more. See why you have to research? Please see a nutritionist if you want to embark on this diet.

When Oyinbo people say, “Please consult your doctor before you start any diet”, they know what they are saying.  Listen to this “KETO DIET WILL NOT WORK FOR EVERYBODY” and “NOT EVERYONE CAN DO KETO DIET”. Please I beg you in the name of Jesus, Anobi Mohammed (PBUH) and Sango, whomever you worship, before you embark on this diet or any diet, please see your doctor first. I have not seen any doctor that will be against their patient’s losing weight except if you are already a size zero (let me side eye you, mcheew) .

Consult your doctor if you have any underlying issues. Even if you do not have any issues that you know of, please see your doctor before you start. It is imperative that they run blood tests and give you the Ok before you start.

That brings me to this point, be careful whom you follow. There are plenty of “keto coaches” out there. Only thing some of these people know is the Keto that work for them. They do not have the education to back up what they are teaching.
