TTM:
Hot seat time. Welcome ma’am.

Ebere Francis Abia (EFA):
Thanks

TTM:
We’ll try to focus on career and business questions

EFA:
Alright

TTM:
So, tell us a bit about Ebere’s academic journey

EFA:
I did my primary and secondary School in Enugu and my University was FUTO. I studied biochemistry in Federal University of Technology, Owerri

TTM:
Are you practising what you studied in school?

EFA:

I’m not practising what I studied, never have.

TTM:
What do you do for a living?

EFA:
I work with an Insurance company as an Agency manager. I help people manage risks and advise them financially.

TTM:
If you were not doing what you do today, what would you do instead?

EFA:

I would have loved to be a doctor and a dancer. I also do makeup.

TTM:
What are your thoughts on career coaching?

EFA:
Everyone needs career coaching especially early in life.

TTM:
What advice would you give your younger self?

EFA:

I would tell my younger self to focus, focus, focus. Believe in your abilities and always trust yiur instincts. In life, you matter most. Never leave your life to chances. Friends are not always what they seem, never give in to peer pressure or give up on your dreams.

TTM:
Paid employment or business?

EFA:
Both. Paid employment for the experience and growth, it also helps when you start your own business. Business for the adrenaline and fulfillment of doing something for myself and by myself.

TTM:
Have you ever felt restricted because of your gender?

EFA:

Yes

TTM:
Can you give a few examples of how you felt restricted by your gender?

EFA:
At my former place of work, my ideas where not appreciated beacause I’m a ‘woman’. “What do I know?”, they ask

TTM:
Did you ever do any Ponzi scheme? If yes, did you lose money? 😄

EFA:

I gave my nanny money to invest and pay me back my lump sum and take the interest. She begged me so much and I succumbed. Unfortunately, I lost the money (400k, MMM)

TTM:

What are your thoughts on Forex Trading? Go or No Go?

EFA:

FOREX is good for those that understand how it works.

TTM:
How did you get your first job?

EFA:
My first job was a family business. I was managing my brother’s laundry.

TTM:
Okay. Why did you change jobs?

EFA:
I couldn’t continue as I got married and had a stressful pregnancy

TTM:
What advice would you give a job seeker in 2019?

EFA:
Always be ready and updated. Whilst job hunting, improve yourself.

TTM:
How did you venture into makeup?

img-20190128-wa0006

EFA:
It’s a lifelong passion. I have been doing makeup since 2004

TTM:
So, do you manage it as a passion or as a business?

EFA:
Both but I have not really taken it as serious as I would love to

TTM:
Have you ever had a terrible boss? How did you manage him or her?

EFA:
Yes, I resigned.

TTM:
Would you have resigned if you knew then what you know now or would you have done a few things differently?

EFA:
I wouldn’t have resigned if I knew then what I know now.

TTM:
What would you have done differently?

EFA:
I would have done more action and less words. By action, I mean doing what is best for the company and put my emotions aside. The colleague who spearheaded it, did out of envy cos I was managing the sales team and later got promoted to managing the branch. So yeah, I would have watched before leaping. My leaving the company brought a major loss and my branch was shut down.

TTM:
I’ll guess you have kids, right?
How do you juggle child care and work?

EFA:
Yes 3 of them. Not easy at all. But staying home is not an option I’d take now. I have a live in help.

TTM:
Are you married? If you are, how do you juggle work/business with marriage?

EFA:
Yes I’m married. Juggling is not easy. But there’s this inner strength that makes it easier. At times, I also chill out with colleagues and friends after work. So that I can clear my head before heading home.

TTM:
What would you tell a young lady that wants to come into your field?

EFA:
Makeup or insurance?

TTM:
Both

EFA:
For makeup, be good. You always learn.

TTM:
Thanks for the wonderful time on the hot seat.
