Tentmakers Online Weekly Round Up – Episode 1

Here is a round up of posts you may have missed on The Tentmakers Online this week.

EDITOR’S CORNER

One of my colleagues spoke to me a few months ago about starting a business for his wife. They had narrowed it down to baking, interior decorations and rentals.

I asked him for an update last week. He was so excited to tell me about the progress of the business. The baking bit is growing. The customer base is growing.

For the rentals, they bought only a few canopies, chairs etc. They have arrangements with more established rental businesses so whenever there is a demand they can’t handle themselves, they fall back on renting from the more established rental businesses.

They are using this method to gather business intelligence. They want the market to guide them on which rental items to invest more in. I think it is a brilliant idea so I’m sharing.

We didn’t get the opportunity to talk about the Interior Decorations part of the business. I’m sure we’ll talk about it when next we have a chat.

Story, Story (Because I cannot come and go and use "werk" to dull myself) Yesterday, I saw some guys that I had helped review/update their business plan and their operations. They had implemented majority of my recommendations and the business is now thriving. One of them had approached me about 2 years ago to complain about how he was pumping money into the business and was getting no returns from the business. He has a day job and the business was a side business. I advised him to get partners that he can trust. In the course of our discussions, we identified the best partners for him. He brought them on board and after many battles, they convinced him to implement the necessary administrative controls. They also had to move the business from where they were located to a place with better visibility. They were located at the back of one shopping complex like that where no one seemed to know them. One of the partners I advised to be brought in pushed for a change of location. He said they are paying less for where they are now and they are achieving better sales. I was so glad to hear from them yesterday. They accused me of not following up and I agree that's a weakness I'm working on. It's on my To-do List 😂😂😂😂 Why am I telling the story? Because we are having our first #TestimonyThursday "rai now". Share your testimonies of your business and career wins/highs here. If you have challenges you want to share about, please come inbox. Welcome to my world! PS: Have you saved today? If your answer is NO, you can send a message to learn more. #StartUpCornerNG #TTMProfessionals #sucmybrandyourchoice #suconlineshopping #sucstrongertogether

I have always been a goal-driven person. When there is a project to be done, I quickly break it down into tasks and I keep my eyes on the ball till the goal is achieved. So, at the risk of sounding immodest, I'll say I achieved quite a lot very early in life. Then, life handed me some lemons. My goal-driven persona fell apart. I was drifting but I guess people around still felt I was a star. A few people that know me well mentioned to me that I was on auto-pilot. I initially did not take the discussions seriously. One of them finally got through to me. I am gradually coming back to setting goals and staying focused till I achieve my goals. That's today's testimony. Feel free to share your business and career success stories, no matter how little or great. It's #TestimonyThursday

#TestimonyThursday Someone (names withheld) shares her story about getting jobs on social media ________ In Oct 2016, I saw an accounting job on LinkedIn. I applied and was offered appointment. I worked for just two months – November and December 2016. I now remembered, so sorry I didn't tell you. You shared a job for an intern in an audit firm in January 2017. As I was eager to learn, I applied, met the employer though he said he won't be paying. As I just wanted to learn and have a reason to leave home, I started and spent 3 months with him. Due to my dedication, he paid me little money that catered for my transport and feeding daily. After the 3 months, he referred me to a senior of his in the profession and I spent another 3 months till June 2017 as anintern without pay. I needed this to get a good job. During the internship in March 2017 or thereabout, I applied for a job I saw on a HR group on Facebook. Though I had forgotten, in June, I was invited for an interview. I succeeded and got a contract job for 3months – July to Sep 2017 at a contract fee and I finished the job in two months and got my pay.(Though not much). Its this same employer I did a contract job for that offered me a job in Jan 2018 (the one I discussed with you then) and that's where I still work. I look forward to a new job soon if my goals here for now are accomplished. I look forward to getting a better job with an audit firm. ——– I pray for each of us searching for (better paying) jobs that God will grant our hearts desires as we position ourselves. There is a group on Facebook where we share deals and opportunities. If you'll like to join us, please send us a message. #ttmprofessionals.

BUSINESS AND CAREER SEGMENT

1. I attended a business and career forum recently. I am sharing the lessons in a 13 part series.

Here is Part 1

View this post on Instagram

Business And Career Forum Lessons Part 1 I promised a 13 part series from the business and career forum I attended last weekend. Here we go. Business Tips 1. The virtuous woman (valiant man) does not give up easily. 2. The virtuous woman (valiant man) does not limit herself (himself) only to local resources and knowledge. She (He) will get the required input from anywhere such an input is around the world. 3. The Proverbs 31 woman was an entrepreneur. There is nothing wrong with women being entrepreneurs. If God's ideal woman is an entrepreneur, every wise man must work towards her emergence. 4. It is okay to fail in business. If you do, get comfort from your support system. Then, go back stronger and better. 5. If you build a strong business, you can run your business with your spouse (subject to creating firm boundaries such that you don't let family ties affect business and vice versa). 6. It's been reported that if women started businesses at the same rate as men, global GDP will be better off to the tune of $28 trillion by the year 2025. (Not yet fact checked) 7. To succeed in business, you need to roughen your hands. The business terrain is not for the faint hearted. 8. When women are sidelined, the economy experiences stunted growth. 9. Men and women complement each other. You will go farther if your business model is built around the complementary, not the competitive aspects of each gender. Career Tips 1. The virtuous woman (valiant man) does not give up easily. 2. The virtuous woman (valiant man) does not limit herself (himself) only to local resources and knowledge. She (He) will get the required input from anywhere such an input is around the world. 3. Men and women complement each other. You will go farther if your career model is built around the complementary, not the competitive aspects of each gender. Stay tuned for more of the 13 part series. At the beginning of the year, I started talking with some friends about their goals and plans for the year. My position is that new year resolutions that are not backed with action plans will be carried over to the next year. I am the accountability partner of a few of my friends. You can join us as we add action plans to our new year resolutions. Our goal is to ensure that we are not the same person we were last year. Below is a sample of a goal that was broken into action plans. Goal: Work towards Masters or at least start saving for it as money is not yet complete. Action Plans: 1. Clearly define the Masters course and find schools 2. Check for scholarships and find out the requirements for the scholarships. See how adding action plans transforms the ideas in your head to tangible results? I am opening up 10 slots in April for people that want to add action plans to their goals. I will be the accountability partner. If you are interested, please send an email to askthettmprofessionals@gmail.com. #TTMProfessionals
