________

TTM:
Tell us a bit about Gift’s academic journey

Gift:
I have a degree in Microbiology. Then, I diverted to management. Both are B.Scs

TTM:
Can you tell us what drove you to this decision?

Gift:
I realized that my Microbiology grades were poor. I attended Business Management classes and enjoyed them so I took a dive at Business Management.

TTM:
Are you practising what you studied in school?

Gift:
No, I am not

TTM:
What’s the gist behind the detour?

Gift:
Job opportunities came and I did short courses and found out safety is needed in our everyday lives. It opened my eyes to things I took for granted even at home.

TTM:
What do you do for a living?

Gift:
I am a Health, Safety and Environmental officer for a logistics firm

TTM:
Why HSE?

Gift:
HSE is wide and is needed in our everyday life. It is an interesting field but horrible when you have an incident so it’s best to avoid an incident happening.

TTM:
Have you ever felt restricted because of your gender?

Gift:
Not really. It’s just that most times I don’t do offshore jobs for the firm. It’s at my insistence, though.

TTM:
If you were not doing what you do today, what would you do instead?

Gift:
I love the food industry. I plan on taking more trainings on pastry and maybe hotel management and interior design.

TTM:
What are your thoughts on career coaching?

Gift:
I think it’s a good one. I wish I had one during my formative years. I would have been on a better path.

TTM:
What advice would you give your younger self?

Gift:
Do what you feel is best for you and stop restricting yourself. Have more self confidence

TTM:
Paid employment or business?

Gift:
Paid employment for now but with space for business

TTM:
How did you get your first job?

Gift:
I got my first job through a friend. I went for an interview and got the job.

TTM:
Why did you change jobs?

Gift:
I wasn’t paid for my first 4 months so I quit and stayed at home doing some small buying and selling. I also did money lending strictly to salary earners and friends.

TTM:
What advice would you give a job seeker in 2019?

Gift:
Get an internship even without pay. Do short courses to take you to the next level. Keep your horizons open.

TTM:
Have you ever had a terrible boss? How did you manage him or her?

Gift:
Hmmmmmm terrible. I just closed work for the day as it was a voluntary weekend I put in. He called on Monday and apologized as he knew the office would suffer as he was going out of town for over a month.

TTM:
Would you have done the same if you knew then what you know now or would you have done a few things differently? What would you have done differently?

Gift:
Always spell out terms and conditions of the job. Don’t just take anything without a written agreement.

TTM:
What would you tell a young lady that wants to come into your field?

Gift:
It’s a wonderful field. Don’t let anyone make you feel inferior. Read up and ask questions.

TTM:

Thanks for the wonderful time on the hot seat.
